A LONG-LASTING PROGRAM

Since 2020, YIV has grown to over 500 outstanding volunteers. YIV’s Peer Tutoring Program, a notable and characteristic aspect of our organization, is a program dedicated to role models in older grades mentoring peers in kindergarten through grade 5 in a variety of school subjects. High school students across North America share their passions through free after-school education for communities of families and children in Metro Vancouver.

If you are looking to build teamwork, leadership, and communication skills, while gaining volunteering experience, we welcome you to work with us!

LIFE-CHANGING

“The YIV Programme encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and invest my time in something I was passionate about- tutoring and helping children with their academics and skills! I wasn't sure what to expect when I enrolled in this programme, but I am so happy that I made this decision! I've gained so many important skills like leadership, communication and now I am more than prepared to utilize them!”

FAQ

Q1: WHAT AGE AND SUBJECT(S) AM I TEACHING?

A1: Kindergarten to Grade 5 students for English, Math, Art, Science, or Mandarin.

Q2: HOW WILL CLASSES BE STRUCTURED?

A2: Lesson plans are entirely curated by you, taught on Zoom. We do not provide a curriculum; however, you may discuss with the student's parent and tailor your class to their needs. We also provide extra resources for your lesson planning.

Q3: IS THERE AN INTERVIEW?

A3: Yes, in order to become a tutor, you must undergo our interview hiring process to evaluate your suitability, knowledge, and passion. But please don't be nervous! The key is to be yourself and showcase your experiences and fit for our program.

Q4: HOW MANY STUDENTS CAN I TAKE ON?

A4: As many as you'd like! On the form, you can indicate up to how many students you can teach for the semester. Extra volunteer hours will be rewarded for every additional student you tutor!

Q5: WHAT IS THE WEEKLY TIME COMMITMENT?

A5: Aside from conducting lessons (which can range from 30-60 minutes), we also expect you to prepare lesson topics and content for students beforehand, but the time is up to your efficiency and discretion.

Typically, we suggest an estimated 30-60 minutes for lesson planning; however, you are welcome to do more.

Q6: DO I NEED PRIOR EXPERIENCE IN TEACHING?

A6: Not at all! we are just seeking high school students with the passion, willingness, and initiative to gain a new experience.

In fact, we highly encourage you to apply especially if you have not tutored before -- we will provide special training and guidance for new tutors!

Q7: ARE VOLUNTEER HOURS PROVIDED?

A7: YES! Hours are given for the duration of your classes (30-60 minutes each).

If you choose to fill in your teaching report, we will provide an additional hour to credit your lesson preparation and report-writing time.

Q8: WHAT OTHER RECOGNITION CAN I RECEIVE?

A8: For our outstanding volunteers, annual and seasonal awards are also distributed, and letters of reference may be requested depending on your holistic performance.
